Weight of 100 Elephants

I believe that paintings should be “two faced”, on one hand telling an obvious straightforward story, and simultaneously saying something less obvious and symbolic.

The obvious, these are paintings of clouds in a big blue sky. New Mexico clouds, familiar, shared theater to all of us living in the high desert. I marvel at their beauty and I am grateful for the possibility of moisture they bring. I am in awe of this magical substance water, which can exist in three different forms, liquid, solid, or gas, depending on local conditions.

The symbolic, I started thinking of these paintings as portraits, cloud portraits representing water, then the portraits took on an environmental/political narrative, because in the desert we live with a heightened awareness of drought as an ever-present environmental issue. The name “Weight of 100 Elephants” comes from the calculations scientists have made to calculate the amount of water an average cloud holds, about the weight of 100 elephants.
